STUDENTS from Tavistock Community College were given the opportunity to voice their views on policing last Thursday. Police officers and members of the Police Authority attended the school to stage exhibitions about crime prevention and police history. The event was held in conjunction with the recent Police Authority Liaison Meeting held at the school. During lunch break, officers gave out crime prevention packs and allowed students to look at police vehicles, uniform and other equipment. Tavistock based members of the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were also present to show the specialist equipment they use. After lunch, a meeting was held with members of the school council where policing issues were discussed. Inspector Ian Milligan said: ?The Police Authority meetings are an important part of public consultation, but it is fair to say that they tend to cater for adults. ?The police are here to serve the community as a whole and we wanted to give young people an opportunity to give their views. ?Some were just happy to try on helmets and be locked in the back of a police van, but the most important part was for us to listen to their views. ?The students who took part in that meeting were very articulate and raised some valid points about how police could interact better with young people. They certainly made me think. ?The vast majority of young people are not trouble makers and want to feel safe when they are out and about. ?We are now going to review the surveys and the views of the meeting.? Inspector Milligan said he hoped similar events would be held again in the borough.
