TAKING on just one marathon over the extreme wilderness of Dartmoor would be enough for most people, but a West Devon graduate is preparing to run five of them in three days this September. Oliver Wheeldon from Crapstone is to take on the distance solo and unsupported to raise money for charity. Not one to shy away from a challenge, Oliver is keen to tackle the task to raise as much money as possible for Children's Hospice South West. With a survival bag, sleeping bag and roll mat in hand, Oliver, who graduated from university two years ago, said he plans to undertake the adventure within the first week of September, weather dependant. Oliver, who completed two marathons in a day over Dartmoor around three years ago, said: 'I've been training a little but I think this is going to be more of a mind game, in that I'm going to be out there for three days on my own absolutely exhausted. 'I chose the Children's Hospice because I believe in the good work that they do. 'In the future I want to keep setting myself challenges to raise as much money for this charity as I can. I've had no personal involvement with the charity myself but it's still very important to me. 'I've previously done a lot of running and walking on the moor for Ten Tors and other endeavours, so I have a lot of experience up there.' Oliver is aiming to complete approximately 43 miles a day in order to finish the challenge within three days, and sleeping on the terrain both nights. A spokesperson for Children's Hospice South West said: 'We are always humbled when ordinary people choose to do something extraordinary for CHSW. 'Oliver's marathon challenge for CHSW definitely fits this description and we wish him success and safety as he embarks on this cross country challenge. 'The sponsorship he raises will help us continue to support local children and their families who are living with life-limiting conditions. 'We rely on fundraising to support our service, so a big thank you to Oliver on behalf of our families.'
