TOWN councillors discussed three draft resolutions recently proposed by Tavistock Genetics Group to specify the town as a GM crop-free zone.
Councillors decided to take no further action following a letter to the town council requesting the discussion of three resolutions concerning genetically modified crops in the Tavistock area.
Members at the finance and general purposes committee meeting on Tuesday, December 17, decided the resolution would be impossible to police and recalled a previous referendum on the issue had drawn a low turnout.
The Tavistock Genetics Group were instrumental in the holding of a parish poll in August 1999 at which 5% of the electorate voted Yes and 0.7% of the electorate voted No, on a question about not allowing GM crops to be grown in the Tavistock area, and making the town a GM-free zone in its shops, cafes and institutions.
