KELLY swimmers won two national titles and set a new national record at the 47th Bazuka National Swimming Championships for Secondary Schools. The championships were held last Saturday at the Neptune Centre, Middlesbrough. Kelly College had qualified in the junior girls, junior boys, intermediate boys, senior girls and senior boys medley and freestyle relays. Due to illness the junior boys could not compete. The Kelly College junior girls? freestyle team of Megan Mackenzie (13), Sophie Howe (13), Laura Sprague (12) and Rebecca Fletcher (14) were first to compete and put on an excellent demonstration of swimming by becoming the English Schools National Champions for 2005 capturing the London Trophy. Megan, Sophie and Rebecca were then joined by Holly Yeo (14) for the junior girls? medley team where again they not only won the event, but broke the English Schools Record by a full two seconds bringing home the Sir William Cocker Trophy. Matthew Henry (14) and Thomas Howe (15), despite running temperatures and feeling extremely unwell, showed themselves to be true athletes, not letting down the other team members of Saul Phillips (15) and Daniel Kidwell (15) by travelling and competing in the intermediate boys? medley and freestyle teams. The boys fought their way through to the finals where they were 5th on both occasions. Rebecca Smith (17), Sophie Stanford (17), Jakie Wellman (16) and Flora Duffy (17) made up the teams for the senior girls medley and freestyle relays. The girls did well to take second place in the freestyle relay and 4th in the medley relay. The Kelly College senior boys teams of David Kelly (16), Jack Cockerton (16), Luke Wakefield (16) and Jonathan Wills (17) were seeded second for the freestyle relay and duly held onto that position improving their district qualifying time by over one second. In the medley relay the boys were seeded fourth but by improving their time from the qualifying rounds by nearly three seconds they moved up to take second place in this relay as well.
