INCLEMENT weather failed to deter the outgoing president of Hatherleigh Rotary Club continuing what has become a tradition of handing over his 'chain of office' at sea.

Ron Carter acknowledged the work of his colleagues during his year as president, before handing over to Andy Tucker in front of 150 guests on board the MV Oldenberg, cruising in Bideford Bay last Sunday evening.

A spokesman said: 'Although the weather was far from brilliant, the sea remained virtually flat calm throughout the trip, with the result that almost everyone on board was able to enjoy the delicious buffet.'

Mr Tucker paid tribute to Mr Carter. He said the club's success over the past year was in no small way down to his leadership.

He was confident that the club's activities, in and on behalf of the whole community, would continue at a high level throughout the coming year.

John Yelland and Terry Hoar were installed as senior and junior vice-presidents.
