THE Museum of Dartmoor Life in Okehampton closed its doors last weekend, and will not open to the public again until the biggest refurbishment in the museum's 22 year history is completed.
The £600,000 refurbishment project is expected to take eight months to complete.
Last Friday, September 26, many people took advantage of a free open day offering the people of Okehampton a last chance to see the museum in its present form.
Project co-ordinator Maurie Webber said the open day was a 'great success.' She said the architect's drawings, model and design sketches for the refurbished museum were on display and proved very popular.
The museum remained open over the weekend, before finally closing its doors on Sunday.
The Victorian Pantry tea rooms and the Tourist Information Centre in the Museum Complex in West Street will remain open throughout the museum's temporary closure.
The refurbishment work at the Museum of Dartmoor Life will include the installation of a lift, a new lighting and heating system, state of the art gallery and new research department with an extensive collection of documents, as well as links into other archives. The planned re-opening should take place next May.
