HURDWICK Golf Club near Tavistock has 100 members, but only 18 of them are women. And now the men are appealing for more women to come along so they can play in mixed events.

Club secretary Ray Hurle said: ?We get invited to play in lots of mixed events but with only 18 women members we have around 60 men who can?t find a playing partner.

?We would like any ladies who are thinking about taking up the game or going back to golf to come and see us. We have a lot of men golfers who would make them very welcome.?

The club is to hold an open afternoon from 2-4pm on Sunday, November 21 for women to look round the course and try out the game.

?If the ladies have never played before it doesn?t matter. We may even organise group lessons for absolute beginners,? said Ray.

Hurdwick?s lady captain Sally Arscott said: ?With only 18 women members and many of those working in the week it is also difficult for us to compete in matches against other clubs. We would be delighted if more women came along - young or not-so-young, experienced, beginners or those who played in the past and are thinking about taking it up again.?

Hurdwick Golf Club opened in 1990 and is a parkland course with beautiful views across Dartmoor. It has a small clubhouse with a bar, and has changing facilities.

Anyone interested in going along to the open afternoon should ring the club on 01822 612746 or they can just turn up on the day. Equipment will be available for any women wanting to try their hand at the sport.
