A 91-YEAR old resident of a home in Yelverton will see her wish come true tomorrow (Friday) when she walks down the catwalk at a fashion show.
Mona Cook, who lives at the Red House Residential Home, had said her one wish was to model in a 'gorgeous' outfit, walking down the catwalk — it was part of the home's Wishing Well', established for those living at the home. Residents pen their wish and each month one is plucked from the well and their dream is brought to life.
Mona said her desire to be on a catwalk started when she was quite young and used to make dresses out of crepe paper. 'I would love to wear a nice posh frock and have my hair done and get all glammed up for a day,' she said.
The request was publicised in the Times and as a result St Andrew's WI in Whitchurch offered to grant her wish — the institute is holding a charity fashion show in aid of St Luke's Hospice and Help for Heroes tomorrow at 7.30pm in Whitchurch Village Hall and has invited Mona to take to the catwalk for them.
The fashion show is being run by Images (Dartmoor Country Clothes) and is sold out. Mona's hair and make-up will be done by Cutting Company in Yelverton.
WI president June James said Mona would be the first on the night to take to the catwalk and she would be escorted by a warrant officer in the Royal Navy on one arm while carrying a handbag on the other.
Mona accompanied the home's care manager Nikki Challinor and June to Images on Monday to select her outfit. June said Mona chose a 'shimmery' outfit. 'She knew what she wanted and feels quite special in it,' she added.
Nikki, whose husband, Carl, will be Mona's escort, said Mona was 'really excited' at the prospect and could not wait to do the walk. All her friends from the home were going along to watch.
