University 3
Tavistock 4
TAVISTOCK mens' hockey team found themselves under immediate pressure with University creating good scoring opportunities.
With the visitors conceding regular short corners it was inevitable the students would score — they did just that when they tucked away a loose ball after the first save by Osborne.
The injured Costello was replaced by Cooley and Tavistock increased the pace and started attacking with more commitment. Jefferies put in a superb run down the left and slotted home the equaliser, for one of the best goals this season.
This seemed to stun the students and before they could pick themselves up Jefferies had put the visitors into the led when he collected a deflected shot and pushed it under the keeper.
Tavistock increased their lead before half time when John Barret capitalised on a loose ball just inside the D and placed his shot with precision through a crowded goalmouth
Tavistock knew the students would come out fighting and struggled to find cohesion. The students scored their second after a poor clearance from defence.
Osborne, playing his best game this season in goal, repelled many attacks with some fine reaction saves.
The lead was extended when a clear goal was kicked off the home side's line and a penalty was justly awarded, which was neatly put away by the captain, Aveyard.
With minutes to go the students scored their third which led to a tense end to the match

OPM 4
TAVISTOCK Seconds hockey team were under pressure from the early stages against a strong visiting team. The defence withstood the pressure well and thwarted the attacks.
Sadly, the generally young forwards were unable to make much headway against an experienced OPM. At half time only one goal had been conceded with Newman playing a fine game in midfield.
During the second half Bott and Knox played skilfully, and with Moyse on good form in goal it looked as if a draw was likely. Towards the end, Thornton stopped one on the line with his foot and the ensuing penalty was put in.
OPM were well into double figures with short corners before finally beating the well rehearsed Tavistock defence. The final goal came from a good shot from the top of the D.
