TAVISTOCK will be transformed with a wonderful display of festive lights tomorrow (Friday) as the town's Christmas lights are turned on by special guest, Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell.

The ceremony will include the switching on of the Trees of Lights, in Bedford Square.

This annual event began in 1999, when the Lions Club of Tavistock agreed with the town council to erect a large Christmas tree on the front of the town hall, to be covered in lights sponsored by members of the public in memory of departed love ones.

It has become so popular that the number of trees has been increased to three, to cater for all the lights.

The ceremony will also include the switching on of the Christmas lights in the town centre, organised annually by Tavistock and District Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber chairman Nigel Eadie said: 'We are absolutely delighted that this year, Heather Fell, Tavistock's Beijing Olympics silver medallist, has agreed to switch on the lights for us.

'On this occasion, Heather will quite literally light up the town!'

The official switching on ceremony, which will include a number of civic dignitaries, will be held in Bedford Square at 7pm.
