TAVISTOCK Cricket Club's president's day was played on a beautiful summer's day, with the cricket matching the weather with nearly 500 runs scored.

Tavistock captain Steve Luffman won the toss and put the president's team in on a wet wicket. Robert Jarman was first to fall with a good knock of 28. There was then a superb stand of 212 by Mark Horwell, 100, and Ben Smeeth, 99 — the latter caught going for a big one.

Both play for Werrington in the Cornish Premier League. This stand delighted the many people watching.

Andy Gauler of the home bowlers achieved the best figures, with 3-27.

Tavistock's reply saw a stand of 58 between Gareth Tidball and Ian Gray. Tidball then departed and David Manning joined Gray and the pair put on a stand of 122 which looked set for a good finish.

A few bowling changes by skipper Stuart Munday changed things and when Manning went the target proved too much.

Ben Smeeth bowled well taking 4-54 with his controlled spin, while Tavistock president Munday finished with 3-23.

Young James McGahey bowled well with no luck, taking 1-50, so with a good finish the President's XI won by 16 runs.
