A MAN has died after being involved in a glider crash on Sunday afternoon at the Dartmoor Gliding Society near Brentor.

A man in his 40s from the Tiverton area was the pilot and died in the crash. There was nobody else in the glider.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances, but the matter is being investigated by an inspector from the Air Accident Investigation Branch.

Police, ambulance and fire personnel were all called after members of the club witnessed the crash just before 1.45pm. The glider came down in a field near the club’s launch site and the pilot was pronounced dead at the scene. The next of kin have been informed.

Police have said that gliding is normally very safe, but the Air Accident Investigation Branch is also investigating a collision between a glider and a light aircraft that happened in Leicestershire within hours of this incident.
