TWO years after a Tesco store was built in Callington, councillors and business leaders are hoping that a scheme to entice shoppers in the town paid for by the supermarket giant will finally be approved.

Recommendations for more on-street parking and pavement widening will go out to public consultation next month through the Callington newsletter and the scheme could be in place by next spring.

Both the town council and Cornwall Highways have accepted the recommendations put forward by a working group of different representatives from organisations in the town with the addition of a pedestrian crossing and traffic light changes at the junction of Saltash Road and Tavistock Road.

The group was set up after the townspeople rejected plans for a one-way system in the town.

Callington Portreeve Jeremy Gist said he was disappointed it had taken so long to come back with a finalised plan.

'It is better, however, to take longer and make it right than to go ahead with something that people are not happy with,' he said.

'We are very keen to see more on-street parking and other measures to encourage people to shop in Callington.'

Cornwall and town councillor Andrew Long said the proposals would be publicised in the Callington newsletter in October asking for any comments back to the town council office by the middle of November.

'Cornwall Council will carry out its final consultation — a legal requirement — during the autumn,' he said.

A sum of £145,000 for a town traffic scheme to enhance Callington was secured through the Tesco development but that has been reduced because of redesigns and consultations.

The cost of implementing the new traffic measures, without the traffic light changes, was estimated at £24,000.

Councillors also hope that there will be some spare cash to make the town more attractive with floral displays and better signage.
