THE West Devon and Cornwall Mining bid for World Heritage Site status is moving ahead as the team responsible for submitting it prepares for the assessors? visit in the summer. Confirmation has been received from assessors UNESCO that the bid complies with requirements and has been passed to the assessing bodies for processing. However, assessors need to visit various sites to determine if the ten bid areas, which include Morwellham Quay, are eligible for the status. Deborah Boden, the World Heritage Site Coordinator, said the assessors? visit will be focused primarily on establishing whether the key management issues are being addressed and whether the site, if inscribed, will be protected and enhanced in line with its WHS status. She said: ?Given the size and nature of the nominated site, we are advising that at least five days need to be set aside in order to provide sufficient time to consider all the potential issues they may wish to address. ?It has also been suggested that the visit take place prior to the school holidays, if at all possible, to avoid heavy traffic causing delays in traveling between venues. However, we will probably not know when the visit will take place until later in April at the earliest.? Stephen Gill, planning chief of West Devon Council, which is one of the bid partners, said they would be holding meetings ?with a vengeance? in coming weeks and putting the itinerary together for the visit. The team is planning the itinerary for the visit well in advance in order to involve a wide spectrum of organisations, so that the assessors can see the breadth of support for the bid.
