RAINBOWS, Brownies and Guides in Tavistock are celebrating after their well-used guide hall received a fresh makeover.

Having secured a small Awards for All grant from the Big Lottery Fund, Tavistock Guide Hall recently hosted an afternoon tea party to show off the new-look hall.

Girlguiding leaders, the hall management committee and invited guests met at the guide hall in Canal Road to mark the completion of the refurbishment of the facilities.

Among the the guests were several members from the Pinder Court community fundraising group who had also recently made a donation to Tavy Girlguiding.

The grant from the Lottery enabled the purchase and installation of new cookers, sinks and work top in the kitchen as well as providing secure cupboard storage. New and improved stair lighting and a thorough check of the building’s electrical system completed the work — all carried out most effectively by local tradesman.

The Rainbows, Brownies and Guides who use the hall can now look forward to their activities in a safer hall layout and more efficient kitchen.

Division commissioner for Tavistock and Yelverton Girlguiding and chair of the guide hall management committee Rica Olver said: ‘The grant from the National Lottery has helped make our facilities far more user friendly and I have already received positive feedback from leaders who love using the new cookers and from local community groups who regularly hire the hall, who now have somewhere to store their equipment securely.’

Rica added: ‘Tavistock Girlguiding is always looking for new leaders and volunteer helpers as well as people interested in old buildings who might like to join the hall management committee to help manage this historic building.’
