BE a greener gardener and compost at home ? West Devon Borough Council is holding a series of roadshows over the next few weeks to help you make the most from your compost. More than a third of what we throw away is biodegradable ? teabags, eggshells, grass cuttings, dead flowers, fruit and vegetable peel, even the contents of a vacuum cleaner. And if you include paper and card that?s up to 60% of refuse waste. All that is needed to transform them into an excellent soil improver is a compost bin. Home composting saves money on buying compost, is a free source of nutrients to help a garden grow, and by recycling waste avoids tipping good organic material into landfill sites. At each West Devon roadshow, a compost expert will offer advice from the borough council?s West Devon recycling team. Local environmental group Westden will be promoting sustainability and local food workshops. At each venue cut price home composters and green cone digesters for all gardening needs are on sale. With each sale there is a free handbook about home composting that also illustrates other innovative techniques such as wormeries to process food waste, and building compost bays for the larger garden. The first roadshow is at Tavistock Farmers? Market on Saturday April 8 from 9am to 1pm. On Tuesday April 11, the roadshow will be in Hatherleigh car park from 10am to 1pm and at Okehampton Farmers? Market on Saturday April 15. The final spring roadshow will be held at the Fox and Grapes car park in Lifton on Saturday April 22, again from 10am to 1pm.
