A STUDENT from Kelly College is seeking sponsorship to help raise more than £500 for his month-long expedition to the Himalayas in aid of Cancer Research UK. Luke Sutton, 17, decided to support the job of cancer research after he lost two of his grandparents to cancer in three years. Around 25 people will be taking part in the hike with the Dorset Expeditionary Society next month. The team will spend two weeks climbing in the Himalayas, and two weeks mountain biking, white water rafting, and having time in Dehli. Luke has so far raised £1,300 but needs more than the basic cost of £2,050, as anything above that amount will go straight to the charity. He has taken part in many events to help raise money. Last year he participated in Ten Tors 45 mile, and attained a bronze medal at the Duke of Edinburgh awards. After the death of his grandfather in April 2005, Luke became even more determined to help the charity. He wanted to better what he had previously done, so this year he completed the Ten Tors 55-mile level, and trained for the Duke of Edinburgh award. Luke participated in a three-day Devizes to Westminster canoe race, known as the canoeists? Everest, and received gold in the overall team and the schools team events. He said: ?I?m looking forward to the expedition a lot. It?s really a once in a lifetime thing. I decided to do this in aid of Cancer Research UK because my grandparents died from cancer.? If anyone wishes to help Luke with his fundraising, contact him via e-mail on [email protected]">[email protected] or letters can be sent to him via Kelly College.
