A COMMUNITY garden and a history group are just two of the projects in the pipeline for a new West Devon community charity.

The Mary Tavy Jubilee Group has issued its second newsletter for the residents of the village, and it is full of information about new projects.

One of the projects it is now working on is the creation of a community garden with vegetables and fruit grown by the young, old and those inbetween, sharing the work and the produce.

It is the aim that the garden, while being productive, will also be ornamental and will be a place where other projects such as crafts and social activities could take place.

At the moment it is just an idea and the first step towards creation is finding suitable land.

A spokesperson for the group said: 'Another project is the formation of a history group which will gather together knowledge and information to become a resource for current and future generations, with its collection freely available to any person or organisation.

'It is anticipated there will be open meetings for anyone interested.

'There is a wealth of history in Mary Tavy, not only its mining heritage but also its buildings, environment and people.'

Following the creation of the much used and much praised footpath, the Jubilee Walk, the footpaths working group will be investigating all existing paths within the parish and will be publishing a printed map of interesting walks in the area.

They will link with the history group to put notices alongside some of the paths detailing some of the history for that area.

For the Jubilee in June the Jubilee Group arranged a Beacon Bonfire event which attracted almost 250 local people, and due to its success the group is now arranging a bonfire night on Sunday, November 4, starting at 4pm with events for children and going on into the night.

The Jubilee Group was formed a few months ago and is now formally a Charitable Trust. The charity document states its objects as 'The advancement of community development, environmental improvement and heritage, through projects undertaken by and for the residents of the parish of Mary Tavy in the county of Devon.'

The Jubilee Group is for the benefit of everyone, and entry to events such as the Bonfire Night and membership of groups such as the history group are all free.

The newsletter was delivered by hand and by email with the aim of it getting to all homes in the parish but if anyone in Mary Tavy hasn't received it, or if anyone wants to join any of the working groups or just find out more information they can call 0845 5193 812, or email [email protected]">[email protected]
