BUCKLAND Monachorum's village hall extension will be opened on February 17 at 1.30pm.

The project fund has been boosted by unexpected grants of £2,000 from the Hanson Environment Trust and £5,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation, both received in December.

These and numerous donations from local people have removed the need to borrow to complete the work. It had been anticipated that a loan of £5,000 to £8,000 would be needed.

The cost of the work, carried out by local builder Rob Graham, was around £71,000. More will need to be raised for revamping the kitchen. The extension provides a smaller meeting room next to the main hall and more storage space. The project has been planned since 1995 and building work began last October.

The opening will be performed by Lord Morley.
