A CALL for the speed limit on the main road through Bridestowe to be reduced from 30mph to 20mph is unlikely to be pursued.

Parish councillors at their meeting last Thursday heard that a Devon Highways survey of traffic near the village school showed speeds ranging from 7mph to 25mph.

Parish council chairman John Leonard said there seemed little benefit in a speed limit reduction: ?People seem to drive very carefully by the school and there does not appear to be a problem.?

Cllr Leonard said a speed cut would have to be coupled with a traffic-calming scheme, involving road narrowing and humps.

?That would not be a good idea because there is a certain amount of commercial traffic that goes through the village.?

Humps would also cause a problem for emergency vehicles, and tractors and trailers, he said.

Cllr Alf Smith expressed concern about the speed of some buses entering the village via Station Road. ?Children are often playing in the area ? it?s an accident waiting to happen,? he said.

The council decided to take no immediate action, but to ?keep an eye? on the situation.

l The recent resurfacing of the main road through Bridestowe was welcomed by Cllr Leonard, who described the work as ?excellent?.

But he said he would like to see it extended to Launceston Road, which leads from the village to the old A30. ?The surface is very poor along there,? he said.
