THE prospect of the railway being brought back to Tavistock is very welcome. If and when it does, can some thought then be put to taking it back to Okehampton? This would be particularly useful as the proposals to run a regular service from Exeter to Okehampton appear to be going ahead and would provide a much needed alternative route to and from Plymouth. On another point, the decision by West Devon Borough Council to do something about the car parking in Tavistock is to be commended. However, I do hope that any of the free parking now available is not going to be taken away and the town turned into a Central London street with parking meters on the pavements! Perhaps someone could elaborate on the plans to introduce parking meters to enable local people to express their views before any decision is taken. Paul Mercer Ivy Cottage Peter Tavy A £10-million investment to restore the Tavistock to Plymouth railway route seems small beer when compared to the £14.5-million poured into the A386 roadworks by the George junction. What a shame that, because the proposal makes such sound economic sense in terms of its tourism potential and the huge environmental impact it will have in reducing traffic congestion, it is unlikely ever to happen.
