OLYMPIC torchbearer Andy Vallance was the guest of honour at the launch of the Museum of Dartmoor Life's latest exhibition.

Andy ran through the town's streets last Thursday, carrying his torch and arriving at the museum officially to open the new exhibition 'The People's Record'.

The exhibition looks at life in Okehampton and the country during the years that Great Britain previously held the Olympic Games, in 1908 and 1948. The exhibition has been given the London 2012 Inspire Mark by the organisers of the Games, LOCOG.

Andy said: 'I'm always happy to do events like this, and visit schools and talk to people. Anything to inspire young people into taking up sport is well worth doing.

'It looks like a great exhibition, and I am sure the 2012 Games are going to be amazing, I am so excited.'

Among the artefacts are contemporary coins, toys, magazines, maps and newspaper cuttings giving a taste of what life in Okehampton was like.

There are also plenty of quiz and craft activities for young and old, and a wall to celebrate the South West's athletes in the 2012 Games, including Georgina Geikie and Tom Daley.

The exhibition runs until Wednesday August 29. The museum is open Monday to Friday from 10.15am to 4.15pm, and on Saturdays from 10.15am to 1pm.

The museum has also planned a family day for Saturday, August 4. Admission will be free, and there will be various activities on offer, including a spy trail, crafts, a chance to dress up in a Bronze Age costume, and all the Olympic activities relating to the exhibition. The family day runs from 10.30am to 3.30pm.
