I WAS aghast and sickened to learn of the postcard campaign to disrupt military training on Dartmoor.

The fact may have escaped those concerned with this act that British Forces are risking their lives daily in surroundings similar to those in question.

Days of empire and colonial role have long since gone. The new roles of humanitarian aid and peacekeeping duties are very much to the fore.

Our service personnel now find themselves protecting the rights of the meek and innocent. This responsibility can often be thankless as well as dangerous, with a fine line between friend and foe.

With problems of overstretch and family separation their lot is already difficult enough. It is therefore imperative that the right to train in this vast and desolate natural wilderness remains.

Poor training facilities cost service lives and anyone completing these cards should be mindful of this fact.
