I REFER to Cllr Rogers' letter in the Times of June 26 and wonder whether he is representing the electorate of Tavistock or his personal business interests.  I also wonder whether he has read the planning inspector's report that gave approval to the 52 non-residential caravans or whether he has chosen to ignore its contents. I would remind him that the inspector stated that 'residential dwellings would not be appropriate here' and 'No more than 52 caravans shall be stationed on the land at any time', ie the land is not suitable for housing and more than 52 caravans would be detrimental to the character of Tavistock. I understand that the meeting at which the town council decided to 'approve' the development at Butcher Park Hill, was attended by only three out of the six members of the planning committe and one was unable to speak due to a 'conflict of interest'.  This is hardly democracy! While I agree that local key workers and young people of Tavistock need 'affordable housing', that housing should be located in the democratically agreed areas defined in the Local Strategy, ie in area SP23A near the schools and necessary infrastructure, not on Butcher Park Hill, which would involve school children in a hazardous walk to school. I would also remind Cllr Rogers that there is nothing to say that 'affordable housing' has to be occupied by local people. We have a local stategy to avoid development in inappropriate locations — let us stick to it and not be threatened by the thought of developers appealing to the Secretary of State. M Deane Chollacott Close Tavistock THERE are some 1,000 houses scheduled or proposed to be built in Tavistock.  With reference to the Strategic Plan under consideration, Cllr Philip Sanders is on record as saying 'The biggest challenge is . . . providing much needed homes . . .' Is he saying West Devon currently has 1,000 families living in temporary accommodation (desperate for a permanent home) and there will be many, many more in the years to come?  Or is this a response to a central government edict, passed through Devon County Council, dictating thousands of houses have to be built to accommodate all the immigrants — and nothing whatsoever to do with the needs of local people? Cllr Colin Rogers, in commenting on the Butcher Park Hill proposal, states '. . there will be 55 affordable homes, which would enable local key workers and young people to buy and live in Tavistock . . .' Local people would have no priority; anybody resident from anywhere in the United Kingdom and indeed the European Union, would have equal claim to such accommodation. Would both Cllr Sanders and Councillor Rogers respond through this newspaper either confirming or denying the above statements? Peter Jones Old Exeter Road Tavistock
