AN appeal has been issued to residents in Tavistock?s Westbridge Cottages area, concerning a consultation about to take place over a new pedestrian crossing in the vicinity.
Cllr Roy Connelly said the proposed site for the new crossing was outside the Texaco Garage in Plymouth Road.
Some residents have already met with him and West Devon and Torridge MP John Burnett to discuss the crossing. They were concerned that car parking spaces in the road would be lost and proposed the crossing should be situated in a different area.
But Cllr Connelly said the county?s highways officers have investigated alternatives and concluded the only safe area for the crossing was the original suggested site, at Texaco.
He appealed to people in the area to let the council know whether they supported the idea or objected to it.
Cllr Connelly said: ?The notice will be going into the local paper shortly, but it?s one of those things where a lot of people might not pick it up in the paper.
?People ought to make their contribution, they have to be aware and get involved, decide if they are for or against it and let the council know.?
Cllr Connelly said the crossing had been proposed because several accidents had occurred in the area and there was a statutory requirement on the part of the county?s highways department to address the issue.
He said the need for a crossing had also been highlighted in the MCTI consultation last year, particularly for elderly people living in the area.
