A BATTLE of the bands event is being introduced to Tavistock Carnival Week, to promote hot new talent and provide entertainment for young people.

The live show will be staged in the Ordulph Arms on July 16 and an appeal is going out for bands to take part.

?The bands have to be able to play for 40 minutes and include one cover version,? said organiser Ewan Miller, who himself is in local act Red Vegas and is a music industry consultant for Devon.

?We are trying to fill a gap in the market because the older, more established bands already have an outlet at The Wharf.

?Our aim is to attract good quality bands from the local vicinity that would appeal to a younger audience.?

Ewan is asking anyone who would like to take part to contact him on 07973 909958.

The band night is just one of a host of musical events and entertainment being arranged by Tavistock Lions Club during carnival week, which kicks off with a carnival disco in the Ordulph Arms on July 11.

Folk music fans need to head to the Bedford Hotel on the evening of July 14 while the Parish Church will be hosting the Rame Head Peninsula Male Voice Choir on July 16.

The Union Inn will be having a rock music night the following day and the crème de la crème of bands and majorette troups will be performing during the carnival procession on July 19.
