OKEHAMPTON'S Ockment Centre will be hearing the patter of tiny feet next week when it opens its bright new creche after two years of fundraising.

The creche has come about through a demand from parents who wanted to study at the centre but were unable to get childcare.

Staff member Mandy Kenyon said it would open up lots more options for more mums and dads.

'It will also help people who want to visit the Citizen's Advice Bureau without a screaming child around their ankles or those who want to do voluntary work — if it is anything connected with the Ockment Centre they are entitled to put their children in the creche,' she said.

The charge will be 80p for a two-hour session and the creche will be supervised by freelance qualified childcarers, most of whom have worked in the creche at Okehampton College.

Funds of £25,000 were needed to purchase toys, pay staff and decorate a room at the Ockment Centre and the campaign has been helped along by grants from the Okehampton Lions, Rotary Club and Inner Wheel, the Rural Development Commission, Nationwide Foundation and Action for Employment.

In addition to this the Ockment Centre has put on a series of fundraising events.

The creche will be opened on Monday morning by Okehampton mayor Christine Marsh.
