PARENTS in Okehampton are being offered the chance to learn to communicate with and better understand their offspring. Okehampton AXS Pathway is offering a free eight-week course to the parents of children aged between eight and 16. The course is funded by Devon County Council, but is being run by an independent organisation. AXS pathway coordinator Gary Skull said: 'They're not at all judgemental, and they're very supportive. 'The course on offer isn't a course for bad parents. It's a course for people who need help communicating with their children. 'An awful lot of parents do have problems with that. I often hear parents say: "I'm at the end of my tether".' The course will look at common communication problems in families and ways to resolve those, but it will also focus on individual difficulties and suggest practical ways to tackle them. Each parent who attends the course will also have the chance to have individual telephone consultations between sessions and two follow-up sessions — one month and three months after the end of the course. There are places for ten families on the weekly course. It begins on Wednesday April 25, from 7-9pm at the Okement Centre.
