East Devon Senior Cup
Buckland Athletic 4
Okehampton Argyle 0
OKEHAMPTON took the game to the league leaders in the first 20 minutes and matched the Devon League elect side for the full 90 minutes.
After 23 minutes, a hopeful ball was swung in from the left for Steve Ausden to head clear, only for the referee to blow for a free-kick to Buckland. The initial shot was blocked by the wall but the ensuing corner resulted in Buckland taking the lead.
Three minutes later, Buckland had another corner which came in from the right, keeper, Richard Bailey, gathered the ball at the second attempt only to be barged off it and during the consequent melee a penalty was awarded.
Argyle finished the stronger as half-time approached.
The second half started much as the first, with Okehampton dominating for the first 20 minutes and Buckland getting the run of the ball in a series of goalmouth scrambles.
In the 64th minute it appeared the task would be made easier after Dickie Price was sent off for gross misconduct after kicking Burdus in retaliation. This however seemed to work with an adverse effect as Okehampton's period of pressure was stemmed and Buckland regained some grip on the game.
Nicky Drew and Mike Vernon were brought in to the fray in the 75th minute but even the introduction of fresh legs could not capitalise on the ten men. During the last 10 minutes when Okehampton were pushing forward Buckland secured victory with two further goals to give them a flattering scoreline.
This week sees Okehampton return to league action at home against Seaton Town. Kick-off 2.30pm. Players meet at clubhouse 1.30pm prompt.
