Jewson South Western League Cup semi-final

Falmouth 1

Tavistock 3

UNDERDOGS Tavistock came through in glorious style to reach the final for the first time since the 1983/84 season.

John Gosling and Chris Gott returned to the starting line-up replacing Danny McTighe and cup-tied Lee Beer who, surprisingly, was signing for Falmouth that night.

The Lambs found themselves a goal down after just seven minutes when from a corner the ball was headed forward for Dale Band to turn in the area to shoot home through a cluster of players.

The Lambs equalised when James Cole chested a Street header off the line and quickly broke out of defence to allow Tiffney to cross for Gosling. He came racing in and with two touches beat Taylor from close range. Band went close again in injury time of the first half when his shot scraped the outside of an upright.

The second half was a different affair as the Lambs put the pressure on the Shipbuilders for the first 20 minutes. Captain Mark Wall doesnot score many from his midfield position but when he does they are of a spectacular version - his second goal of the season and the Lambs' second was no exception. Gosling's throw-in was headed across the penalty area and Wall hit it left foot on the volley into the back of the net.

Crocker's attempt at goal went straight to the keeper on the hour before Jeff Babb replaced Tiffney. It was his headed ball on that Crocker controlled, and shot low past Taylor to put the game beyond Falmouth.

The Shipbuilders fell apart at the seams in the final minutes and the Lambs could have embarrassed them even more with Gott and Gosling missing good chances.

Manager Steve Hart later reflected that, 'It could have been all over had Falmouth taken their early chances but we weathered the storm and got stronger as the game went on and in the end fully deserved the victory.'

The final is on Mon May 1 and Tavistock will face the winners of Holsworthy v St Blazey who replay at Bodmin next Tuesday kick-off 7.30pm.

JUST to prove that Thursday's cup game was no fluke the Lambs travelled to Bickland Park and completely shut out high flying Town - only the third team to take points off the leaders this season.

But it was a case of after the Lord Mayor's Show as both sides were feeling the effects of the cup game. Goal chances were few and far between with Mark Rapsey hitting Andy Meeds post when clear and Chris Kiely going close for the Lambs.

The frustration of the home side's supporters reduced them to booing their own players and the Lambs could have rubbed salt in their wounds had they taken two late chances. Gosling shot wide and Cole saw his shot saved by Taylor.
