Devon Premier Cup

second round

Tavistock 5

Cullompton 3 (aet)

FOR the second week running the Lambs were taken into extra time by their opponents in a cup match, and two late goals sealed victory, writes

Eric Pinch.

The visitors had the first chance when a crossfield ball was not cut out but they failed to take advantage of the opportunity. The Lambs missed early chances with John Gosling and Lee Cansfield shooting wide.

Lee Annzuitia headed wide for the visitors when well placed and Gosling shot wide again before heading the ball into the net but was penalised for pushing.

But on the half-hour they took a deserved lead. From a Craig Hodge centre confusion reigned in the Cullompton defence, Gosling and Cansfield combined on the edge of the area and despite appeals for handball play continued for Gosling to put the ball beyond the reach of keeper Chris Carnsworth.

Three minutes later the Lambs went further ahead, Tony Cusack's headed flick on in midfield sent Dean Tongue away to round the keeper and cross for Cansfield to pick his spot at the far post.

But the game turned dramatically around the hour. Two goals in two minutes put the visitors back in the game. James Smith was put through to slot the ball past a helpless Andy Meeds and from a flick-on Matt Stone shot low past Meeds.

The remaining half-hour was played out with few chances going to both sides and extra time was inevitable. In the second minute the Lambs went into the lead again, substitute Steve Shaw put Gosling down the wing and his cut back was met first time by Cansfield to give Carnsworth no chance.

Still Cullompton would not give up and when Shaw's half clearance was put back into the area it came to James Cotterall to slam the ball past Meeds to make it three apiece.

With a minute to go of the first period of extra time the Lambs took the lead for the third time. Dean Tongue's one-two with Cansfield gave him space in the area to send the ball goalwards and it took a deflection to go past the keeper.

It was not until three minutes remaining of the second period before the Lambs finally put paid to the visitors' challenge. Gosling's run up the wing set up Cansfield to complete his hat-trick and send the Lambs into the third round where they play Okehampton away on October 28.
