Penryn 2

Tavistock 1

TAVISTOCK had an early start to beat the traffic jams and arrived at Penryn almost two hours before kick-off. It turned out to be the only victory of the day.

The Lambs had basically the same side that did so well last season, the only difference being David Hallett in the starting line up and Sean Cann and Matt Dawson on the bench.

The Lambs penned the home side in their own half for the first 15 minutes with James Cole going close and Paul Adcock striking wide before the home side had their first chance.

Dave Wilkinson skipped past captain Nathan Blamey on the halfway line to go on but Tavistock keeper Andy Meeds came to his skipper?s rescue to save the goalbound shot.

The Lambs should have gone ahead on the half-hour. Paul Smith?s fierce free kick was fumbled by keeper Andy Avery and the ball fell to Lee Doncaster but his weak stab was smothered by Avery to prevent a certain goal.

It proved to be a turning point in the game when eight minutes later the home side took the lead against the first half run of play. Substitute Jamie Thirkle crossed in for Wilkinson to head home unchallenged from close range.

The second half started in similar fashion to the first with Avery tipping over a Cole effort and new signing Hallett striding forward from midfield to see his long range effort go just over the bar.

The Lambs got back on level terms on 65 minutes when Hallett?s through pass found Smith who sent Simon Parnell away on the right. The front man came inside to send in a left foot shot that gave the keeper no chance.

Sean Cann came on to replace Doncaster and soon made his presence felt with a run and shot at the keeper. A short back pass let in Parnell but the keeper just got to the ball to block the striker?s shot.

With eight minutes remaining the Lambs found themselves behind for the second time. Jones? cross came over and Meeds shouted to claim it but the normally reliable keeper failed to collect and Phil Willey got to the ball first to head over him into an unguarded net.

The keeper atoned for his mistake with a fingertip save a minute later.
