UNDER a cloudless sky with no wind Tavistock ladies battled with China Fleet in the first round of the 'Mail on Sunday' competition. Despite the glorious weather the China Fleet course played long after the recent heavy rain but the greens were in good condition. There was some excellent golf and hard fought games but Tavistock lost by three and a half to one and a half. Earlier in the month Tavistock Golf Course was swept by driving rain and strong winds when the men played the qualifying round of the 'Daily Mail Foursomes' . This was won by Dave Burge and Shaun Kiely. The date and venue of the next round are yet to be announced. The men's and ladies' monthly medals were played in perfect, but cold, conditions and some excellent scores were made. In the ladies' medal Lesley Moore in division one came in with a nett 69 with runner up Nikki Gawman at nett 76. Division two was won by Gail Reed with nett 73 and runner up Barbara Chalk carded a nett 77. In the men's medal - Mike Coles, division one, also made a nett 69 while the runner up was Dave Burge with nett 70 on count back from Graham Ruth. In division two Brian Newland won on count-back from Phil Philott with nett 70. Third was Graham Kelly with nett 74. In division three Grant Reed won on count-back from Andy Rich with a nett 71; third was Keith Steinhouse with nett 78.
