THE Plymouth and district Summer League has now finished, with some very mixed results for the Yelverton teams.

The men's A and B teams in divisions three and five respectively were unfortunately both relegated with St Budeaux C and Ivybridge E after a disappointing season. There were many problems with player availability but the juniors drafted in gave a very good account for both teams.

The Ladies' A team were promoted to division one last year but were unable to retain their position and now return to division two with Whiteford Road. First pair Helen Smith and Karen Gasche achieved most of the team's 26 points with support from Angie Lynch and Mags Berry.

The B team in division four consisting of Ann Short, Wendy Sharland, Jenny Kay and Liz Parks were hoping for promotion back to division three but were overtaken by a strong Mannamead B and St Budeaux teams. Yelverton came third with 57 points, which included a walkover against Devonshire C. Shirley Every returned from a season-long injury to help secure a 7-2 win against Tavistock C.

The C team in division five also came third with 22 points. They drew 5-5 in their final match against Saltash on grass courts. It was good to see Julia Whetton back playing after two seasons of injury. Newcomers Fiona Smart and Jean Humphries helped to secure valuable points alongside regulars Mary Downey, Lyn McFarlane and Janet Strelling. Liz Falconer, Hilary Monk and Mair Preston Jones also played.

On the positive side Yelverton continue to raise money towards their floodlighting project to add to the £8,000 they received from Awards for All. Recent events were a car boot sale at Yelverton by kind permission of the War Memorial Hall committee which raised £600 and a golf day, a further £725.

Mary Downey, for Yelverton Golf Club, said: 'This was our first ever golf day, which was held at Tavistock Golf Club on a rare dry day in July. Members and friends enjoyed the golf and following meal and our thanks go to all our sponsors and Tavistock Golf Club for their hospitality.'
