FOLLOWING the half-term holiday Okehampton and District Tennis Club will start junior tennis on the Simmons Park courts this Saturday, June 15 at 10am.

Chairman, David Carter, will be returning from a two-month break to co-ordinate the activities and provide coaching.

The morning sessions will be split into two one-hour sessions. From 10am to 11am beginners and under 8s and from 11am to noon for better younger players and for 8 to 11-year-olds.

Tennis rackets and balls are provided and the cost per hour is £1.25 a week. This is a great opportunity for younger children to learn basic ball skills and to see if they want to develop an interest in playing tennis.

With Wimbledon approaching the club is also aware of the added public interest in tennis. To encourage older children, Saturday from 2pm to 5pm is available for over 11-year-olds and invited primary school juniors.

The invited juniors will be mainly the 10-year-olds who have regularly attended Saturday mornings in the past.

These children will have the opportunity to play matches and practice supervised by members of the Okehampton club. Tennis balls are provided, however children are encouraged to bring their own rackets. The cost for the three-hour session is £2 per week.

David Carter will also be available for coaching for those juniors who want to improve their tennis and have the opportunity of joining the successful junior league team organised by the club.

Okehampton currently has an Under 16s team, which has developed over the past few years. The club is now looking to compete in younger age groups for both boys and girls as well as looking to maintain the success of the current Under 16s team.

For children wishing to learn how to play tennis or for those with a desire to play more competitive tennis, the Okehampton club can provide an opportunity.

Further information can be obtained from David Carter on 840521.

The club is also looking to encourage adult players. The main club evenings are on Tuesdays from 6pm and Saturdays from 5pm. Tennis balls are provided and visitors are welcome at a cost of £2 per evening.

Adult coaching will be available for a six-week period starting at 6.30p on Wednesday June 26.

Members can play at other times throughout the day, providing courts are available. Two courts are normally in use throughout the week in the evenings for league matches for the more competitive ladies and men.

During the day courts are usually available subject to facilities being available to the public at a cost of £3 per hour.

The club is seeking to upgrade its current facilities and is expecting new courts within the next two years. For people interested in playing tennis either competitively or for social enjoyment this is a great opportunity so join now. David Carter can again provide further information.
