AFTER recovering from the mammoth task of organising the recent Sport Relief Mile in Okehampton, Bridestowe man David Hocking is preparing for his next charity venture — the Leafy Lanes Walk.

People are invited to enjoy the fresh air and countryside surroundings in a Sunday stroll later this month to raise money for Derriford Hospital's oncology department.

Families, friends and individuals can choose to walk three, six or eight miles along quiet roads and lanes in a fully marshalled circular route from the White Hart Inn in Bridestowe.

David said: 'The walk is through spectacular countryside and is family and dog-friendly. It has become a community event and just a great, fun day and I would encourage people to come and join us.

'In the afternoon there will be live music at the pub with Sam Cooper joined by Bob Cooke. The pub will be open all day with bacon sandwiches, tea and coffee and a Sunday carvery.'

This will be the second Leafy Lanes walk David has organised, raising money for the oncology department as a thank you for the treatment he received after being diagnosed with throat cancer.

Tree surgeon David said: 'I'm really pleased to be able to organise this walk for the oncology department to say thanks for my treatment. I'm now in remission and doing very well. I still suffer with fatigue but being in the tree business, that's no surprise. Having lost four stone, I'm now back, eating like a horse.

'I would urge anyone who has any worries to see their doctor as soon as possible because there's more chance of survival.

'I'm pleased to be welcoming Sue Lamb, manager of the Derriford Hospital oncology unit, to open the event. I think the world of her and her team who do such a fantastic job assisting between 16,000 and 18,000 people a year in the radio therapy unit alone.

'All the money raised will go towards patient positioning — supports for necks and arms etc, which support various areas while having radio therapy.'

The walk will take place on Sunday May 23, starting at Bridestowe's White Hart Inn at 11am. Registration is £4 for adults, £2 for under 16s and £1 per dog.
