OKEHAMPTON is blessed with a beautiful natural park thanks to the generosity of Sydney Simmons who, in dedicating the land to the public, we are sure intended it to remain so.
The dictionary definition of the word 'park' includes, and this is a quote: 'a large tract of land, usually woodland or pasture, kept in its natural state for public benefit'.
This is what Simmons Park has hitherto strived to remain, despite a number of encroachments over recent years. It is a place of peace and pleasure, enjoyed by young and old alike. Sited within the town and around the East Okement River, it is exceptionally beautiful — perhaps unique.
We would like to persuade the town council that it should remain so.
Any further plans to build sports complexes or parking areas should be strongly resisted. We are sure there are sites left within Okehampton which could be better utilised for these purposes.
