A SPECIAL event is due to be held in Tavistock town centre next Tuesday ? part of a nationwide campaign to mark the centenary of a leading national association. The ?Stitch in?, being held in front of Tavistock Town Hall, is part of the Making Visible campaign being run by the Embroiderers? Guild. It will also mark the 25th anniversary of the Tavistock and District branch of the guild, whose members are taking part in the event. Rosemarie Smith, of the Tavistock group, said visitors to the ?Stitch in? will be treated to a demonstration of a wide range of embroidery techniques by its members, who have worked on a number of community projects as well as the stunning wall hanging which is mounted in the town hall. The ?Stitch in? will take place on May 2 between 10am and 3.30pm ? the embroiderers will be demonstrating their craft in the pannier market if the weather is bad. It is a busy year for the Tavistock group ? on July 8 this year they will be hosting the South West Regional Embroiderers? Guild Festival at Tavistock College, an event at which international speakers and traders will be present. And in September the branch will be holding an exhibition at Buckland Abbey, entitled Stitches in Time, to mark its 25th birthday. The Embroiderers? Guild was set up in 1906 by 16 graduates of the Royal School of Art Needlework to ?deal entirely with embroidery, and with the first object of keeping up a high standard of work and design?. Initially only open to embroiderers who had achieved a certain standard, it is now open to craftsmen and women of all skill levels and has around 25,000 members.
