East Cornwall division one Lifton 1 Tavistock 2 THIS was a top versus bottom as well as a local derby, so both sides were up for it. It only took five minutes before Tavistock had a chance with Paul Cowling bursting through only to shoot over the bar. Lifton replied with a defence splitting ball, with goalkeeper Rowe on the edge of the 18 yard box saving the shot - but the referee thought it was saved outside the box and this led to a red card for a Tavistock player. This changed the rhythm of the team as Chris Bray took the goalkeeping role, leaving a lone striker up front. Lifton pushed the game to Tavistock and there were great saves from Bray. Eventually on the half hour Lifton scored. Tavistock would not lie down and equalised through Paul Mellors' header from a great Andy Bacon free kick. In the second half it was all Tavistock and they deservedly got the winner 20 minutes from time when Luke McPherson fired a low drive in the bottom corner from an Aaron Rocky pass. The last ten minutes saw the referee send three Tavistock players off with straight red cards, so manager Mick Piper order his players to shut up shop and hold on. With just the seven players remaining it was very much 'the great escape'. l This week Tavistock are away to Polperro.
