THE carnival atmosphere comes to Okehampton this weekend with the town's popular annual event taking place on Saturday.

The grand procession of floats led by Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band and Okehampton Fire Engine leaves Mill Road at 7.15pm before winding its way through the town centre to Crediton Road, Limehayes Road and Exeter Road returning later to the town centre.

The carnival programme starts at 1.15pm with the judging of the 'All Day Collectors' and Children's Classes in the Charter Hall.

The crowning of the Carnival Prince and Princess, Corey Friend and Deanna Cherry, is at 3.05pm, followed by the afternoon procession

This year's Carnival Queen, Lyndsey Webber, will be crowned at 7.05pm.

The judging for the 'Best Dressed Window' competition among town businesses also takes place during the day.

Another highlight is likely to be the Devon Fire and Rescue Ceremonial Unit who will be playing in Fore Street before the main procession.

The sound of the Bideford Young Pipe Band will also be heard through the town's streets during the day.

This year the carnival committee will be making a donation to the BBC Radio Devon Chestnut Appeal as well as charities in the Okehampton area.

l From 6.45pm until 8.45pm, the following roads around the town centre will be closed to all vehicular traffic including pedal cycles: George Street, Fore Street, East Street, Crediton Road from the junction with East Street to the junction with Limehayes Road, Limehayes Road, Exeter Road from the junction with Limehayes Road to the junction with East Street, Northfield Road, North Street from the junction with Northfield Road to the junction with East Street, and Mill Road.
