A BUCKLAND Monachorum woman launched herself onto the information superhighway with a brand new car this week.

Laurie Canvin missed out on the top £1-million prize — but was one of four people to win a Ford Focus in the BT 'Internet a Million' competition to promote the company's web services.

Mrs Canvin was presented with her prize at the Millennium Dome on Tuesday by cricket superstar David Gower.

'It was a fantastic day, I was absolutely thrilled — such a brilliant surprise — wow!' said Mrs Canvin. 'We've never won anything before.'

She said they had to answer a question on the BT website with information gleaned from another site, but was very lucky because millions of people had entered the competition.

Tavistock Community College was also a winner as Mrs Canvin nominated her children's school to win a new computer, monitor, printer and £240 worth of software.

School spokesman Graham Stoate said: 'We are delighted that the Canvins have won a prize themselves and even more delighted that we are involved as well.'
