A STUNNING quilt, created in commemoration of the 900th anniversary of the granting of Tavistock?s market charter, was unveiled on the town?s saints day last week. The charter quilt, made by the Goosey Quilters group, was revealed during St Rumon?s Day at a special songs of praise service in Tavistock Parish Church. The colourful quilt, featuring market images, a row of geese and the wrought iron gates to Tavistock Pannier Market, was unveiled by designer Eileen Foster and the mayor of Tavistock, Cllr Jenny Metcalf. As a gift to the town, the quilt will be displayed in the pannier market at the request of the quilters? group, protected by a specially commissioned case. It took 12 quilters four months to complete and its design was kept a secret until the official unveiling last week. Cllr Metcalf thanked the quilters for their ?inspirational? work and the many hours of dedicated stitching which had gone into its construction. She said: ?It is very beautiful and rich in colour and provides a splendid commemoration of Tavistock?s charter celebration year ? thank you, on behalf of all the town.? Eddie Carruthers, Tavistock Pannier Market reeve, said: ?It?s very nice of the group to present us with this beautiful quilt and we are very proud to accept it.? Mr Carruthers said the quilt will hang above the middle arch in the market, at the town hall end. ?It will be the first thing people see as they come in through the main entrance,? he said. ?We had to be a bit careful where it was hung ? we didn?t want direct sunlight going on it.
