Gulworthy Primary School has joined West Devon Borough Council recycling officer Jane Savage as winners in the UK finals of the Yellow Woods Challenge 2005. Gulworthy is a runner-up in the UK Sculpture Competition receiving £500, a certificate and a hedge and copse pack to plant in their school grounds. The competition was part of the Yellow Woods Challenge 2005 - the simple, educational and fun schools environmental campaign run by Yellow Pages and the Woodland Trust, working together with local authorities. ?Red Nose Day Mad Hair Day? (see picture) was built out of Yellow Pages directories that the school had collected for recycling and was inspired by the fund raising campaign. The sculpture was chosen by Neil Buchanan, celebrity presenter of ITV?s ?Art Attack?, as one of the two runner-up sculptures in the national competition. Neil said: ?I thought this was an ingenious idea to use yourselves as the features on this fun face. The clothes the children are wearing shows planning and you can see just how big the face is.? Jane Savage proved to be one of the top recycling officers in the competition and received a ?Bronze Beech? award in the finals for achieving the third highest number of directories recycled per pupil for her area ? each pupil across the borough recycled an average of 2.64 old Yellow Pages directories. In total, 1,669 schools across the UK took on the Yellow Woods Challenge last year ? for every pound awarded to schools throughout the Challenge, Yellow Pages gave a matching pound to the Woodland Trust, raising £63,000 to help the Trust protect native woodland. Will Hermon, headteacher at Gulworthy School, said: ?All the school are extremely pleased to be a runner-up in the national competition. The creation of the sculpture in the playground was an enjoyable experience in itself. ?Winning £500 is a welcome, if unexpected, bonus! We plan to use this money to support the redevelopment of our school field.? Jane, who thanked all the West Devon schools that took part, is co-ordinating the Yellow Woods Challenge 2006, which is currently taking place and will be inviting schools from the Tavistock side of West Devon to take part from January until March.
