HAPPY nappies are the answer to a green future and one new born baby will be taking home a year's supply this week. The Devon Real Nappy Project is giving away a set of washable 'real' nappies to the first baby born in Okehampton Hospital during Real Nappy Week, which is running for this week. The prize, worth £120, is in support of Real Nappy Week, a national campaign aiming to inform parents on the alternatives to disposable nappies and highlighting how parents can help combat climate change by using real nappies. Bryan Carson, chair of Devon Authorities Waste Reduction and Recycling Committee, who fund the Real Nappy Project, said: 'All nappies use energy, whether it's to make disposables or wash real ones. But, taking everything into account, washing nappies at home leads to less climate change impact than using disposables. 'With more than 28 million disposable nappies being thrown away in Devon every year, using real nappies, even part time, can make a difference and will save up to 5,600 tonnes of waste going to landfill. 'Most new parents are unaware of the wide variety of washable nappies now available. These modern real nappies are environmentally friendly, economical and easy to use. There is no need for folding, boiling or soaking anymore and pins have been replaced with velcro and poppers.' A recent survey found 85% of women are 'very concerned' about the effects of climate change on future generations. The Devon Real Nappy project believe that using real nappies offers parents one way they can tackle climate change and help make a difference. They also stated that parents can save close to £500 on average each year by using real nappies rather than disposable ones.
