I ATTENDED the meeting of West Devon Borough Council's planning committee when it chose to go against the recommendation of its own planning officer and voted for a Tesco supermarket on the outskirts of Tavistock. At that meeting, I was appalled at the arrogance of certain councillors telling us how and where we should shop and that we needed the experience of Tesco shopping. How misguided and ill-informed they were. Tesco itself recently admitted to letting customers down by falling well short of their expectations, with trading losses of 6%. Cllr Oxborough is to be applauded in his, and Morrison's, attempt for a Judicial Review, following such a one-sided discussion which resulted in the subsequent narrow vote in favour of this application. Perhaps the judge's reasons for refusing the Review Application will be published in due course? As for the future, it currently seems we can look forward to the rural southern approach to our delightful, historic market town being blighted forever by, on its own admission, a second-rate superstore that appears to care more about self survival than it's customers. Meanwhile, may our Lidl, Morrison and Co-operative stores continue to thrive, while worthy Waitrose carries on attracting many from this area. Janet Sturmer Whitchurch
