MEMBERS of Dartmoor National Park will decide on the fate of the run-down Great Tree Hotel in Chagford on November 1 after visiting the site to consider a planning application by a housing company.
Gerald Wood Homes want to demolish the hotel, which lies in extensive grounds, and replace it with ten residential units and associated parking.
An engineers report has revealed that the hotel building is 80 per cent defective.
The proposal was deferred at the last planning meeting of Dartmoor National Park because of concerns from opponents and Drewsteignton Parish Council which is worried about the safety of the access onto the main road.
Four letters of objection also raise concerns about a lack of local facilities, the loss of hotel accommodation and the amount of new houses being built in the National Park, which are exceeding the expectation in the County Structure Plan.
Principal planning officer Colin Jarvis said there was a bat roosting in the building and work would be carried out for alternative accommodation for the bats.
