A WEST Devon woman is embarking on a huge challenge to raise thousands of pounds for an animal hospital by trekking through India on horseback.
Debbie said: 'I will be joining a group of people mainly from the UK for the 10-day trip, riding through varied landscapes and camping each night. The Brooke operates in 10 countries across Asia, Africa and Latin America. It prevents suffering by reaching more than 900,000 animals every year, benefiting more than five-million of the worlds poorest people. They have more than 800 skilled staff working directly in the field with the animals and communities.'
Debbie said people taking part in the trip had to be experienced and confident riders, capable of riding at a fast pace in a group.
'We fly to Delhi and then have a seven-hour journey to the horses and our start point. We will ride the Indian Marwari horses. They are extremely beautiful and have ears that curve inwards at the top.'
She has been stepping up her riding since December and has been regularly swimming and going to the gym to help with her stamina for the trip.
'The idea of actually going now is becoming very real and I am very excited about it, if not apprehensive,' Debbie said. 'I have never been to India before. I know when I get to the airport the nerves will start as I am afraid of flying — probably more than I am about doing the challenge.'
Debbie has so far raised £2,890 and will still be receiving donations throughout her trip. Anyone who would like to support Debbie can visit http://www.justgiving.com/Debbie-Cornthwaite">www.justgiving.com/Debbie-Cornthwaite
