WITH another academic year drawing to a close at Duchy College in Stoke Climsland, staff and students celebrated in style at the annual summer ball last week. Nearly 600 students and staff arrived for the event, which was held in an enormous marquee overlooking Kit Hill and beautiful surrounding countryside. This year the theme for the ball was voted for by students, who chose 'Hollywood Glitz and Glamour'. There was certainly a star-studded feel to the evening as students and staff walked the red carpet, complete with 'Hollywood Stars' creating a Duchy College 'Walk of Fame'. The marquee was decked out with Hollywood inspired artwork drawn by Falmouth Marine School student Andrew Brock from St Austell and painted by Duchy College students. Duchy College students' union committee, including April Davey from Yelverton, Alice Govier from Tavistock, Katie Bolt from Okehampton along with Lacey Bellows, Rachael Beale and Kate Olding, helped to organise and plan the ball alongside student liaison officer Rosie Harman. The evening's entertainment kicked off with a live street dance performance by a group of ten Duchy College students, choreographed by Lacey Bellows. Students could also have a go on the dodgems, visit the candy bar or get amusing photographs taken in a photo booth complete with a fancy dress box of props. Animal management course manager Phillipa Underwood, who helped to plan the event, said: 'This year the students chose the theme and created all the artwork, which set the scene in the marquee. It was a fantastic turnout and I would like to thank everyone involved . . . 'The summer ball is a wonderful opportunity to get everyone together to celebrate the year. It was a great evening and something the students look forward to every year.' Andrew Counsell, head of Duchy College, added: 'It is brilliant that all the students celebrate their achievements by letting their hair down with this amazing event.'
