NINETEEN members of Tavistock Athletic Club were among the 568 runners at the start of the the Plymouth Hoe 10-mile road race.

The race started at Brickfields, took a double loop around the Barbican, the Hoe and Union Street, before climbing back up to Brickfields for two laps of the track to finish.

The race included a special Devon versus Cornwall Challenge and athletes selected from each county's running clubs were invited to form a combined county team. TAC's Pete Freedman was one of the six-strong Devon male team, which this year triumphed over Cornwall. Pete was also first TAC male to the finish in 10th position, earning a UK Athletics Diamond award for his time.

Tony Symons, returning to full fitness, was next home, coming fifth in his age-category. Pete Bazley ran strongly, cutting four minutes off his previous year's time for the race and was third TAC member to finish.

Trevor Williams once again excelled, gaining a personal best and winning his age-group. Because the race was also a county championship, Trevor is the new male 65 plus 10-mile Devon champion.

Paul Marshall has been training hard for the forthcoming Taunton Marathon, and his time gained him a UK Athletics gold award for his age. Richard Windermer also gained gold, as did Andy Houghton who knocked a huge nine minutes off his 2009 finishing time.

Special mention must be made of new club members, Kate Willis, first lady to finish, and Andy Thorpe, both running their first race for the club.
