BARGAIN meal deals and samples of free wine and cider will be on offer during West Devon?s Food Fortnight Trail, which begins this Saturday. Money-off deals at local food shops and cream teas will also feature, with local businesses from farms to restaurants, pubs and shops taking part in the trail ? which will provide the chance to sample some of the best food and drink in the area. The trail starts on Tavistock Carnival day, with daily events culminating in the weekend Food and Drink Festival on July 29 and 30. A brochure detailing the trail and events is available from tourist information centres, council offices, libraries and participating businesses. West Devon Borough Council is leading the initiative in partnership with the Food and Drink Festival committee. The festival will be held in Bedford Car Park in Tavistock and is in its third year. It is expected to attract more than 100 exhibitors from Devon, Cornwall, Dorset and Somerset. West Devon deputy mayor Cllr Ken Williams said the food trail and festival went hand-in-hand as an ideal showcase for businesses in the area. ?I do hope that people will support the trail and show their commitment to quality produce. I think our lovely food is part of what makes West Devon the truly great place it is today,? Cllr Williams said. The trail also links to the Tavistock EastWise ? Eat Local campaign, an initiative by Tavistock Forward, which played a major role towards Tavistock winning the Best Westcountry Food Town award and Best Overall Food Community in the South West in April.
